Lotion Recipes

Any of these lotions can be made up and poured over wipes in a container. I use a lidded plastic box from Ikea, but you could just as easily use a disposable wipes container, or a tupperware box. Alternatively, keep your wipes dry and put your chosen liquid into a spray bottle. It can then be sprayed either onto the wipes as needed, or direct onto baby's bottom.

Basic lotion:

2-3 drops of baby bath
5-6 drops of baby oil
1 teaspoon of witch hazel

Place ingredients in an empty standard sized jam jar, and fill to the shoulder with cold water. Put the lid on the jam jar, and shake ingredients to mix thoroughly. Take care not to use too much baby bath, as it is drying to the skin.

Luxury lotion:

Squirt baby oil
2 drops lavender essential oil
2 drops Roman camomile essential oil.

Pour the ingredients into a jam jar, and shake to mix thoroughly. Top the jar up with warm tap water. If preferred, you can use tea tree oil instead of lavender oil, but this is not recommended on infants younger than 6 months old.

Simple Lotion

Simply make up a mug of chamomile and honey tea, allow it to stand and stew for a while, remove teabag and when cool pour over your wipes. Again, surplus can be stored in the fridge. This will last a day or, at most, 2 so don't make up too much! I recommend keeping your wipes in a plastic box – an empty wipes container is ideal if you have one, otherwise a tupperware box will do fine. Pour your chosen mixture onto the wipes until moist. Store any surplus mix in the fridge.

CAUTION!

Do not use the oils undiluted on the skin or internally.
Keep the oils away from children and eyes.
Do not use the oils if pregnant, epileptic or suffering from high blood pressure.
If using an oil causes irritation to the skin, or if in any doubt, seek the advice of a professional Aromatherapist.

An Aromatherapist should be able to advise as to which oils would be most suitable in each individual situation; they can also advise as to which means of using the oil will be most effective.

For a list of qualified Aromatherapists in the UK, guidance can be given by the Aromatherapy Organisations Council who can be contacted on 01858 434242.
